What were navigation acts?
Example of control Britain wanted
- stated that products being exported from/imported to America could only be carried by British ships.
- American products, such as sugar, cotton and tobacco could only be sold to Britain
- lead to clashes

Tea act
1773
Townsend acts repealed to relieve tension
Tea Act was then passed which allowed the British East Indian Company to sell tea in the colonies without paying import tax – making it cheaper than anyone else’s. This led to further riots and protests.
Boston tea party
In December 1773 – American colonists disguised as American Indians boarded an E.I.C. ship and dumped its cargo of tea into the harbour. Boston Harbour was immediately shut down until the E.I.C. were paid back and martial law was introduced.
