What were the ‘Black Codes’?
Laws implemented by the Southern States in order to control freed slaves. It restricted AAs rights and allowed those that attacked AAs to go unpunished.
When was the Freedmen’s Bureau set up?
1865 but was closed in 1872
Who set up the Freedmen’s Bureau?
Congress
What did the Freedmen’s Bureau do?
- Provided shelter, food, hospitals and education for AAs
2. Negotiated work contracts between AAs and their former owners
When was the 13th Amendment implemented?
1865
When was the 14th Amendment implemented?
1866
When was the 15th Amendment implemented?
1870
What did the 13th Amendment do?
Abolished slavery across America
What did the 14th Amendment do?
Gave African Americans citizenship
What did the 15th Amendment do?
Gave African Americans the right to vote. This was not enforced properly so Literacy Laws and the Grandfather Law were introduced in Southern states.
What was the situation like for African Americans by the 1870s?
- Sharecropping still existed- whites still controlled AAs
- Flurry of AA political activity- not seen again until late 1960s
- Civil Rights Acts of 1866 and 1875 did little as states drew the line at integration
