What was the aim of the New Deal?
It aimed to relieve the effects of the economic crises caused by the Great Depression.
What positive impact did the New Deal have on African Americans?
It provided them with:
- 1 million jobs
- 50 000 housing units
- Financial aid
- and allowed sharecroppers to become independent farmers
When was the Fair Labor Standards Act introduced?
1938
What did the Fair Labor Standards Act do?
It set the minimum wage and maximum hour working week. This was beneficial for AAs as it stopped them being exploited by employers
What negative impact did the New Deal have on African Americans?
- Most Alphabet Agencies, like the Federal Housing Agency (FHA), did not support AAs
- Aid did not always reach AAs
What did the Federal Housing Agency (FHA) do?
It enabled more Americans to own their own homes BUT refused to help black families buy houses in traditionally white neighbourhoods.
What is the significance of the New Deal?
It was the most significant change for civil rights since the Reconstruction Period. However, its impact on AAs was limited, especially as it was not specifically designed to support AAs- its main aims was to relieve the effects of the economic crisis.
