What was the significance of the NAACP?
It was one of the first major organisations that began to unite the civil rights movement.
What did the NAACP do?
It challenged the Jim Crow Laws and mainly focused on legal campaigns to do this.
When was CORE founded?
1942
What did CORE do?
It was a non-violent organisation that led sit-ins, freedom rides and boycotts. The majority of its initial membership were white supporters.
What was the SCLC?
The Southern Christian Leadership Conference, led by MLK
When was the SCLC founded?
1957
What did the SCLC aim to do?
It’s main aim was to improve the lives of Southern African Americans and offer a non-violent alternative to the NAACP’s litigation approach.
What were the main downfalls of the SCLC?
Initially it had poor organisation, a lack of staff and lack of membership which hindered its success.
How was the SCLC able to help the progress of civil rights?
Their Christian background made it difficult for white supremacists to attack their organisation.
What was the main downfall of the NAACP?
It did not have much of an impact after 1963.
What was the SNCC?
The Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee.
When was the SNCC active?
The 1960s.

Empower ordinary people
What was the SNCC’s main downfall?
It became increasingly militant and the emergence of black power divided the movement.
