The Rate of Photosynthesis Flashcards
what are the three factors affecting photosynthesis?
light intensity, CO2 concentration and temperature
what happens if a plant doesn’t have enough light?
it cannot photosynthesise quickly
what happens if light intensity increases?
Increasing the light intensity increases the rate of photosynthesis until a limiting factor becomes in short supply.
what happens if CO2 is increased?
photosynthesis will increase. at some point a factor may become limiting
what are the chemical reactions that combine carbon dioxide and water to produce glucose controlled by?
enzymes
what happens if the temperature is low?
the rate of photosynthesis is limited by the number of molecular collisions between enzymes and substrates.
what happens if the temperature is high?
the enzymes are denatured.
what is a limiting factor anyway?
a factor which, if in short supply limits or reduces the rate of photosynthesis
what happens if plants have white sections on leaves?
they will grow less vigorously
what happens if the amount of chlorophyll is limited?
less photosynthesis will take place.
what happens if a leaf is in permanently dim light?
it can turn completely green
what if a plant doesn’t have enough minerals?
it can’t make chlorophyll and the leaves will eventually drop off and the plant will die.
