Aerobic cellular respiration Flashcards
is respiration an exothermic or endothermic process??
exothermic
what is the equation for respiration?
glucose + oxygen –> carbon dioxide + water + energy
C6H12O6 + 6O2 –> 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy
where does respiration take place?
in the mitochondria and the inner membrane
what is in the air that we breathe in?
0.03% - CO2
21% - O2
79% - Nitrogen
what is in the air that we breathe out?
3% - CO2
18% - O2
79% - Nitrogen
define respiration
the process that releases energy from food
why is oxygen needed in respiration?
to release energy from glucose
what is CO2 in respiration?
a poisonous by-product
how is water made?
when the energy is released from food
what is energy needed to do?
EVERYTHING
what do the transport systems do for respiration?
take materials to and from respiring cells
why do living cells need respiration?
they need energy to carry out the basic functions of life. They build up large molecules from smaller ones to make a new material eg digestion
why do animals need respiration?
energy from respiration is transferred to their muscles to make muscles contract
why do mammals and birds need respiration?
to maintain a constant internal body temperature almost regardless of surroundings
why do plants need respiration
energy from respiration is transferred to move ions eg nitrates from soil into root hair cells. also transferred to convert surgars, nitrates and other nutrients into amino acids which are then built up into proteins
