Metabolism and Lactic Acid Flashcards
what is metabolism?
all the chemical reactions in the cells of an organism, including respiration
metabolic reaction #1 (synthesis)
the conversion of glucose to starch, glycogen, and cellulose
metabolic reaction #2 (synthesis)
formation of lipid molecules from a molecule of glycerol and three fatty acid molecules
metabolic reaction #3 (synthesis)
the use of glucose and nitrate ions to form amino acids that are then used to make proteins
metabolic reaction #4 (breakdown)
the reactions of respiration
metabolic reaction #5 (synthesis)
the reactions of photosynthesis
metabolic reaction #6 (breakdown)
the breakdown of excess proteins in the liver to form urea for excretion in the urine by kidneys
what is a breakdown reaction?
making smaller molecules from larger ones. usually do not require much energy
what is a synthesis reaction?
build up of larger, more complicated molecules. they require energy from respiration
can metabolism vary?
yes. it depends on genetics, gender, age, proportion of muscle to fat, external temperature, exercise
explain the external temperature example
if it decreases it can cause an increase in the metabolic rate, so as to create the extra heat needed to maintain the body’s internal temperature
what are the liver’s metabolic functions?
detoxifying poisonous substances eg ethanol
what else does the liver do?
break down excess proteins to form urea for excretion and convert lactic acid to glucose
