150,000 Jews voluntarily left Germany
What did most German Jews feel about leaving the country?
They felt thoroughly German and wanted to stay
Why was making the Reich ‘Jew Free’ through emigration not straightforward?
It was difficult to find foreign countries willing to accept large numbers of Jews, as many countries had begun to raise barriers to limit Jewish immigration
When was controlled emigration enforced?
After March 1938
How was emigration beginning to be controlled?
- Reinhard Heydrich used Austria as ‘laboratory’ for developing SS policy
- Central Office for Jewish Emigration set up; 45,000/180,000 Jews forced to emigrate
- All Jewish organisations combined into a single ‘Reich Association of the Jews in Germany’ allowed for organisation difficulties to be dealt with by Jews themselves
