the psychodynamic approach Flashcards
how many levels is the mind made up of
3
what is the conscious mind
things we are aware of
what is the pre concious mind
anything that could be brought into the conscious mind
what is the unconscious mind
things outside of our awareness that are unacceptable or unpleseant
what is the id
please principle; basic drives towards sex and agression
what is the ego
reality principle; balances id and super ego
what is the superego
morality principle; after socialisation= conscience and moral standards
why is the psychodynamic approach important
past traumatic events can become part of the unconscious however still affect adult life
why are there psychosexual stages important
it can shape a persons life due to fixations that may occur if the stages are not completed in childhood or over completed
what are the 5 stages
oral
anal
phallic
latency
genital
what is the oral stage
the primary source of pleasure is the mouth and sucking
what can the oral stage fixation cause
smoking
overeating
what is the anal stage
the primary source of pleasure involves the anus
toilet training is in high demand
ego starts to develop so children become aware of people placing demands
what is the anal stage fixation
being messy or particular
what is the phallic stage
the primary source of pleasure involves the genitals
oedipus complex - son unconsciously wants to get with his mother and therefore get rid of the father may cause the child to resolve this through changing their identity to be like their father
what is the anal stage fixation
masturbation
what is the latency stage
the development of other activities means less concentrations on sexual areas
previous conflict repressed resulting in little being recalled from childhood
what is the latency stage fixation
sports
school
activities
what is the genital stage
the primary source of pleasure is now hetrosexual relationships
fixation and conflict may prevent this with the consequence that sexual perversions may develop
what is repression
a defence mechanism used by the ego where traumatic memories are forced into the unconscious
still break through and affect behaviour
what is denial
deny an event as it cannot cause anxiety
what is displacement
the redirection of emotion at an ‘easier’ target, this is an unconscious process
AO3- strength
strength
- psychoanalysis therapies (dream analysis)
- access the unconscious mind and repress traumatic memories that pps have been ignoring
- these are then solved and reduce negative effects
- very successful and still used today
AO3 weaknesses
weakness
- gender bias and less developed views on female sexuality
- oedipus complex which causes castration anxiety and debilitates a boy into confusion and jealousy
- Freud later alluded to electra complex for females
an after through from his origami theory
- less valid and can’t be generalised
weakness
- not scientific or falsifiable due to no scientific evidence
- based on a case study called little hans
son of Fred’s friend had a fear of horses and Freud concluded it was the oedipus complex
- cannot be tested or proven- less valid and credible to due casual nature
- can’t be certain so can’t generalise
