origins of psychology Flashcards
who was the first person who was called a psychologist
wundt
where was the first lab
leizpig germany
what is introspection
first systematic attempt to study the mind by breaking up conscious awareness into basic structures of thoughts, images and sensations
what is psychology
the scientific study of the mind behaviour and experience
what was wundts experiment method
- presented with stimulus
- inspect own thoughts
- draw conclusions
what were the 3 categories of responses
thoughts
images
sensations
what is structuralism
isolating the structure of consciousness- the stimuli was always presented in the same way and order with the same instructions
what were the strengths of wundts work
- methods were systematic and well controlled
- all introspection were recorded in the controlled environment lab ensuring that possible extraneous variables were not a factor
- carefully standardised so they were tested the same way
what were the weaknesses to wundts work
- other aspects of his work will be seen as unscientific today
- relied on self reporting the mental processes
- data is therefore subjective
- participants may have hidden some of their thoughts
so wont have met the correct standards of scientific enquiry today
what does FORE stand for
falsifiability, objective, replicable empirical
f ( possible that the hypothesis should be false)
o ( measurement not affected by expectations of researcher)
r ( accurate recording of procedures to allow replication)
e ( using observations to gain knowledge)
what is FORE used for
to make sure theorys are scientific
