the provisional government Flashcards
intro to PG
-feb revolution marked the end of the Romanov dynasty
-unable to establish legitimate new government
-led to dual authority: Petrograd Soviet and provisional government
provisional government
-power came from the fact it was drawn from the state duma
-knew it was temporary
-aim was for a new constitution to be drawn up
-price Lvov was the prime minister
-rest of gov was made up of leading liberals and kadets
-kerensky played a vital role: to ensure cohesion between two powers as he was a member of the Petrograd soviet and the provisional government
importance of Petrograd soviet
-represented the working people and soldiers of Petrograd
-aim was to defend workers rights
-they were elected by Petrograd workers and these elections took place regularly
-it was seen as more powerful than PG: PG was provisional, had control of railways factories and garrisons
Petrograd soviet vs St Petersburg soviet of 1905
similarities: both elected by soldiers and workers, elections took place regularly, delegates and ordinary workers received the same pay
differences: in 1905, intellectuals who were radicals were able to advise the soviet, by 1917 this had changed as they were able to become full members
nature of dual power/issues of PG
Provisional government still faced many problems: policy of revolutionary defensism, this meant to continue ww1 to defend revolution. this led to many problems- workers still wanted higher pay and less hours, peasants wanted to own land they worked on, pg was still temporary
