intro to Russian civil war
-started in the middle of 1918, ended in early 1921
-ended in communist victory
-was mainly between reds (bolsheviks) and the whites
causes of Russian civil war
-many bolshevik opposition did not want to accept full bolshevik power
-lenin saw it as an opportunity to remove political opposition
-some wanted to defend the empire, others fought to prevent this
-bolsheviks, for some reason, had a lot of opposition
the course of the civil war
-the bolsheviks were not expected to win and they were fighting an uphill battle
-had control of 1/5 of the red army
Red control
-lenins government controlled a lot of the northern and central russia
-these areas were very densely populated-recruitment and support
-they were also very industrialised
-this industrialisation gave them control to the railways
White control
-unlucky in geographical control
-not very densely populated areas
-not very industrialised: fewer factories, less ability to produce munitions
-they were divided so they were difficult to control
green control
-controlled parts of the ukraine
-resources were limited
-surrounded by the whites
nationalists
-controlled Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan
-again surrounded
murder to the tsar
-tsar abdicated on 2nd March 1917
-hoped to gain passage to germany and britain
-did not, soviets relocated so they couldn’t be saved by tsarist supporters
-Lenin wanted to eradicate
-trotsky and others wanted to put them on trial
-17th of July, 1918, photographer sent them to the basement to prove they were still alive and they were murdered
