What is the prostate gland?
It’s the largest accessory gland of the male reproductive system at 3cm long.
What is the base of the prostate related to?
The neck of the bladder.
What does the anterior surface of the prostate gland consist of?
Muscle fibres that are continuous with the urethral sphincter, and is deep to the pubic symphysis.
What is the posterior surface of the prostate gland related to?
The rectum.
What does the prostatic duct open into?
Opens into the region of the urethra that lies within the prostate, the prostatic urethra.
What is prostatic fluid?
It’s thin and milky and supplies 20-25% of the volume of semen, spermatic is only 1% of the volume of semen.
Why is the secretion slightly acidic?
Slightly acidic secretions aid mobility of the sperm and facilitate coagulation of the semen just before ejaculation.
Why is semen coagulated?
Because it adhere to the inside of the female reproductive tract better.
Where do the bulbourethral glands lie?
Immediately inferior to the prostate gland.
What is the secretion from the bulbourethral glands like?
It’s transparent and viscous, it adds some volume to semen but also acts as lubricant.
Where do the ducts of the bulbourethral gland open into the urethra?
Soon after the external urethral sphincter.
