The Male Reproductive System 1 Flashcards
What do the internal organs of the male reproductive system consist of?
The testes The epididymides The ductus deferentes The seminal vesicles The ejaculatory ducts The prostate The bulbourethral glands
Where do the organs of the male reproductive system sit?
The testes sit outside the body in the scrotum, the other components sit within the lesser pelvis.
What are the testes?
Firm, mobile, ovoid organs that are suspended in the scrotum by the spermatic cord.
What are the testes covered by?
A fibrous coat, the tunica albuginea.
What is the function of the testes?
To produce sperm and hormones, principally testosterone.
What are each testis divided into?
Each testis is divided into lobules but fibrous septa.
What lies within the lobules?
Coiled seminiferous tubules lie within the lobules.
What do the tubules open into?
They open into a network of channels called the rete testis.
What joins the rete testes to the epididymis?
Efferent ductules.
What is the tunica vaginalis?
A double layer of connective tissue, and it’s a closed peritoneal sac.
What are the two layers of the tunica vaginalis?
The visceral layer and parietal layer.
What is the visceral layer of the tunica vaginalis?
It’s closely applied to the testes, epididymis, and the inferior part of the ductus deferens.
What is the parietal layer of the tunica vaginalis?
It extends further superiorly than the visceral layer and reaches into the distal spermatic cord.
Why is there a small amount of fluid in the cavity between the two layers?
It reduces friction and allows the testes to move freely.
