What 4 things does the female reproductive system consist of?
The vagina
The uterus
The uterine (fallopian) tubes
The ovaries
What is the vagina?
A musculo-membranous tube that connects the uterus to the external genitalia.
Where is the superior end of the vagina?
It surrounds the cervix.
Where is the inferior end of the vagina?
It opens in the vestibule, between the labia minora.
Where does the vagina run through?
The lesser pelvis.
What does the vagina recess around?
The cervix, forming the vaginal fornix.
All of the vagina is collapsed, the anterior and posterior walls are in contact with each other, what’s the only part of the vagina that isn’t collapsed?
The superior part where the walls are held apart by the cervix.
What is the vagina related to posteriorly?
To the base of the bladder and the urethra.
What is the vagina related to medially?
Pelvic muscles, fascia and the ureters.
What is the vagina related to anteriorly?
The anal canal, rectum and rectouterine pouch.
What is the cervix?
The opening to the uterus.
What is the superior opening of the cervix?
An opening into the uterus called the internal os.
What is the inferior opening of the cervix?
Its inside the vagina known as the external os.
What is the epithelium layer of the cervix like?
It is squamous at the internal os but becomes stratified at the external os to protect itself from the acidic environment of the vagina. The area of changed tissue is predisposed to cancerous changes.
