The Process and Types of Memory (Levels) Flashcards
What is the Atkinson-Shiffrin Three Stage Model of Memory
These are 3 different memory systems characterized by time frames.
- Sensory memory
- Short-term memory
- Long-term memory
What is Sensory Memory
These are external events from our senses that are held just long enough to be perceived.
- Iconic memory
- Echoic memory
- Haptic memory
What is the Iconic Memory
This is the memory for things you see, it lasts for less than a second
What is Echoic Memory
This is the memory for things you hear, it lasts for 3-4 seconds.
What is the Haptic Memory
This is the memory for your sense of touch, it lasts for about 2 seconds.
What is Short-term Memory
This is what we are currently aware of or thinking about, this comes from paying attention, it only available for a short while.
What is Long-term Memory
This is the memory held of a longer time period, more than a few seconds.
What is Fergus Craik and Robert Lockhart’s Level of Processing Model
It says that how deeply we encode information plays a role in how well and long we remember the information.
What is Depth
This refers to the level of attention, focus, elaboration, and emphasis on a particular memory.
What is Shallow Processing
This is encoding on a basic level, based on the structure of appearance.
- Structural-encode physical qualities
- Phonemic encoded sound
What is Maintenance Rehearsal
This is when you keep repeating information in order to memorize it, it can increase the length of information to about 30 seconds. It prolongs information presence in STM.
What is Deep Processing
This is when you encode information in a meaningful way, we create associations between new and existing memories.
What is Semantic Encoding
This is when you encode the meaning of a word to a similar word with similar meaning. The encoding of meaning.
What is Self referent encoding
When you encode information based on your interest. We remember what we are interested in.
What is Chunking
This is when you take individual pieces of information and group them into larger pieces.
