Memory and Forgetting Flashcards
What is Long Term Potentiation
This is a constant strengthening of synapses based on recent patters of activity.
What is Storage Decay, Hermann Ebbinghaus
He was the first to conduct studies be using himself as a subject.
What is the Forgetting Curve
This is the rapid loss of information shortly after learning it.
What is Trace Decay Theory
Overtime our memories biologically degenerate.
What is Amnesia
This is when an individual losses part or whole due to injury or trauma. Types:
- Retrograde Amnesia
- Anterograde Amnesia
What is Retrograde Amnesia
This is when you cannot remember things that happened before the amnesia event.
What is Anterograde Amnesia
This is when you cannot create new memories after an amnesia event.
What is the Serial Position Effect
When we try to remember a list of words, we can remember the first words and the last but we forget the middle words. Types:
- Primary effect
2: Recency effect
What is the Primary Effect
This is when you are better at recalling the first items.
What is Recency Effect
This is when you are better at recalling the last items.
What is Retrieval Failure “why we forget”
This is when we fail to remember a memory due to missing stimuli or clues that were present when we got the memory.
What is the Tip of the Tongue State
The feeling you get when you feel the memory is available but you just cant retrieve it.
What is Encoding Failure
This is when you fail to put information into a memory system, the memory was never formed.
What is the Interference Theory
This is when some memories interfere with the retrival of other memories. Types:
- Proactive (previous) Memories
- Retroactive (recent) Memories
What is Proactive (previous) Interference
This is when older memories interfere with the retrival of newer memories.
