Positive signs of pregnancy
direct evidence!
• auscultation of fetal heart sounds
• cardiac activity on ultrasound
Average length of pregnancy
280 days from first day of last menstrual period (LMP)
equal to 40 weeks, 10 lunar months, 9 calendar months
Trimester division
FIRST: 12 weeks
SECOND: 13-27 weeks
THIRD: 28 weeks to delivery
Primigravida/Primipara

GYN HISTORY (surgeries, Pap, STI, breast history)
OB HISTORY (GPTPTAL, cesarean, VBAC)
CURRENT PREGNANCY (planned? bleeding? pain or edema? baby moving?)
ETC. (med history, ROS, nutrition, family history, environment)
Objective Data: Chloasma
butterfly shaped pigmentation of face (”mask of pregnancy”)
Objective Data: Linea nigra
hyperpigmented line sternal notch, past umbilicus to pubis
Objective Data: Striae
stretch marks (bright red then lighten post partum)
Objective Data: Areola and nipples
enlarge and darken pigmentation
Objective Data: PMI
could be displaced up and to the left
Objective Data: Murmurs
benign, will resolve post partum
Objective Data: PV
bilateral pitting edema, varicose veins
Objective Data: Neuro
DTRs may be increased (possible sign of preeclampsia)
