1 in 9: The Long Island Breast Cancer Action Coalition
Was formed to pressure politicans to address breast cancer. Named after the statistic that 1 in 9 women are likely to get breast cancer over the course of her life.
The SCAR Project
Goes by the motto, “Breast cancer is not a pink ribbon” and shows the reality of cancer as well as not stigmatizing people who choose not to go under surgeries to preserve body image.

The Emergence of Activism
During the early 1990s, protesters and breast cancer organizations in Long Island pressured politicians and officials to address breast cancer as well as to allocate more money for breast cancer research.
The Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project
Breast Cancer rates on Long Island are higher than national average, so a study was conducted in the late 1990s to study women with and without breast cancer, along with their environmental exposures. Examined soil and water and dust samples. In 2002, the study found no link of any dangerous or banned pesticides or chemicals to breast cancer.

Exploring whether there are vulnerable times during development of the breast when exposure to environmental agents may influence risk for breast cancer later in life.
