Covert Disease
The disease is undetectable by standard testing. It is hidden or concealed.
Ex). Hypertension
Somatic symptoms
Physical symptoms, concerning one’s body.
Ex). chest pain, shortness of breath
Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)
Refers to the class of diseases that involve the heart or blood vessels
Coronary Heart Disease
Refers to the failure of coronary circulation to supply adequate circulation to cardiac muscle and surrounding tissue. Most common form of disease affecting the heart.

Genetic Predisposition
Explains the difference from person to person for certain risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity.
Mediation
When a variable transmits the effect of one variable to another variable, offers an explanation as to why one variable leads to the occurrence of another.
Ex). How do psychosocial factors result in CVD?
Psychosocial factors –> health behaviors –> CVD
Psychosocial factors –> physiology –> CVD
Mediators
Variables that cause mediation.
Ex). health behaviors are mediators of stress to poor health outcomes.
Social Isolation
When a person doesn’t have a confidante, intimate relationships, or has few social activities/interactions.
Social Support
Includes emotional support and help or assistance.
Non-Modifiable factors
Featurse that may put one at risk that are not able to be changed.
Includes: genes, family history, and age.
Modifiable factors
Features that may put one at risk that can be changed, e.g. health behaviors.
Type A Personality
High hostility, competitiveness, and time-urgency, can be associated with CVD, but not as strongly in women as in men. Most harmful is hostility.
Anger
Hostility is a dispositional trait, while anger is a situational response.
Work Stress
High demand and low control
