Menstruation to Menopause Flashcards
Menarche
The onset of menstruation
Amenorrhea
When a woman suddenly stops getting her period (different from menopause). Being underweight can make women more prone to this.
PMS
Premenstrual syndrome; no sufficient evidence that it really exists. Related to the negative emotional and behavioral symptoms experienced before women get their period.
Dysmenorrhea
Is painful menstruation and it has a biological basis.
Menstruation
Shedding of the lining of the uterus.
Ovulation
A mature egg is released from the ovary
Luteal Phase
Phase from ovulation to menstruation (the premenstrual portion)
When PMS occurs.
Follicular Phase
Phase from menstruation to ovulation
PMDD
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder; is being treated as a psychiatric disorder. A more severe form of PMS.
SSRIs
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors: commonly prescribed antidepressants, used as a pharmacological treatment for PMS
Self-fulfilling prophecy
Having a belief or an expectation, about PMS for example, can lead to actually experiencing those emotions.
Retrospective studies
Asking the participant to reflect on how they felt when they experienced something previously; often used in research about menstruation and PMS, find most evidence of PMS reports in these studies
Flaw of retrospective studies
Because they have experience about how they felt, women may implement these expectations for future periods. So, how do we know that our memory of the days leading up to our period is accurate?
Demand Characteristics
When researchers unknowingly clue their participants for what types of responses they are looking for.
Illusory Correlation
Overestimate the co-occurrence of things that are actually independent. (thinking that there is a correlation between two variables when there really isn’t)
