What is the Political spectrum?
A way of seeing different political views in relation to one another. These can be mapped across one or more axis (+).
How does the Political spectrum work?
Scale with opposite ends - left and right ~ each end represents a group of principles, and those on the left tend to oppose those on the right. Most of these principles are about the best way to organise society in order to thrive.
Why does the way the Political spectrum works matter?
- Helps you spot bias.
- Helps you reflect on your own bias.
- Helps you to understand why a new policy or law is made.
What does Ideology mean?
A system of ideas and ideals, especially one which forms the basis of economic or political theory or policy.
What does Socialism favour?
Nationalisation of public services, intervention in social and economic policy and greater equality.
What does Liberalism favour?
Less state intervention but some regulation from government on key policies.
What does Conservatism favour?
Privatisation of public services, less state intervention in social and economic policy and greater personal autonomy.
