The Pituitary Gland (Anterior/Posterior) Flashcards
There are 6 hormones associated with the anterior pituitary gland. What are they?
- Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
- Leutinizing hormone (LH)
- Growth hormone (GH)
- Thyroid Stimulating hormone (TSH)
- Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
- Prolactin
There are only 2 hormones associated with the posterior pituitary gland. What are they?
- Oxytocin
2. Antidiuetic hormone
The posterior pituitary gland has a neurosecretory cell that comes from where?
The hypothalamus
It either secretes oxytocin or antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
Oxytocin (from the PPG) targets what?
Smooth muscle
i.e. ejaculation and birth (contractions)
ADH (antidiuretic hormone) does what?
Monitors kidney water balance.
The anterior pituitary gland is made up of what kind of tissue?
Simple cuboidal
What kind of tissue is the PPG made up of?
Nervous tissue
What does FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) target?
The gonads
What does FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) do for women?
Regulates the menstrual cycle through blood estrogen levels
What does FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) do for men?
Stimulates sperm production in the testicles
What does LH (leutinizing hormone) target?
The gonads
What does LH (leutinizing hormone) do for women? Men?
Women: Regulates menstrual cycle by triggering the release of an egg (ovulation)
Men: Stimulates the testes to release testosterone
What does ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) target?
The adrenal glands
What does ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormon) produce?
Cortisol (it affects metabolism)
What does TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) target?
The thyroid
