knowledge of god and his own nature
- Jesus is referred to as the ‘word’ so must have been present at creation (let there be)
-EARLY CHURCH - hypostatic union, Jesus and god are two natures in one - Did Jesus have the choice to act as he wished?if he didn’t should he be praised?
RAHNER on Jesus knowledge of god and his own nature
Jesus had layers of consciousness with human self consciousness closer to surface.God consciousness deeper within.
Jesus as god and man
- Jesus must be god as he also had power to save humanity from sin
- Jesus had to be human to live as we do and experience pain and suffering
- Jesus does not have sinful nature and could be tempted but rejected unlike Adam and Eve.so he could bring us to salvation
medieval christians
Jesus has knowledge in there ways
face to face - knowledge of god and all eternal and created things
An infused knowledge - not learned given by god
knowledge of life - in normal human way ( through experience

Jesus was of ‘the same substance’ as God but not a blend of both natures.
issues with Jesus as God and man
- God and humanity are different so how can someone be both - christians reject Demi God idea
- GERALD O COLLINS - we can’t draw conclusive answers about inner life of anyone.Jesus had a unique relationship with god and had a mission.
Miracle of Jesus
- New Testament shows Jesus as a miracle worker (wedding at Cana, healing the sick)
HUME - we should treat miracles with scepticism and believe a more logical explanation instead.
EDWARD SCHILLEBEECKX - miracles are metaphorical not literal
N.T WRIGHT - miracles stories show that Jesus had the power to unite people and restore communities.
resurrection of Jesus
- centre of christian belief
PAUL - there would be no christianity without resurrection

Jesus as rabbi
- Teacher
- he taught in synagogues and in the open
- moral teachings on forgiveness and love of enemies
LEWIS - makes no sense to accept his teaching but not him as son of god.’he is bread of lie’/
BONHOEFFER - incarnation , we meet god in other human beings, in a unique way.
Challenge of the myth of God
Hick - Jesus teaching similar to others Muhammed, guru Nanak and Moses
- God coming to earth as a human is a metaphor.Jesus just had gifts inspired by God.
- Christians disagree and say his human nature can’t be separated from his divine nature , Gods sacrifice was a single act of universal significance that goes beyond personal morals.
Jesus challenges social injustice

- spoke out about domination of rich over the poor
