The pelvis Flashcards
Made up of three bones that don’t fuse, but articulate. Also known as the pelvic girdle
Pelvis
Part of the vertebral column, fused vertebrae
Sacrum
The wings of the sacrum
Alae
Anterior projection of the sacrum, edge of the top that is raised over everything else
Promontory
Openings in the anterior surface of the sacrum where sacral nerves pass
Anterior sacral foramina
Horizontal ridges on anterior surface of sacrum that mark the edges of the fused vertebrae
Transverse lines
Articulate with the inferior facets on L5. Sacrum
Superior articular facets
Rough, raised wall of bone consisting of fused Lamina and articular process of sacral vertebrae. Bumpy, raised ridge
Dorsal wall
Spine of sacrum, projection of fused spines of sacral vertebrae. Most posterior projections
Median crest
Auricular surface of sacrum, ear shaped joint surface for articulation with the os coxae. Lateral
Sacroiliac joint
Vestigial tail/tailbone, 3-5 fused vertebrae
Coccyx
Mature forms from three separate bones: ilium, ischium, and pubis
Os coxae
Fuses to create os coxae, blade-like
Ilium
Posterior anterior part that fuses in the os coxae
Pubis
Inferior and anterior part that fuses in os coxae
Ischium
Hemispherical hollow that forms hip socket, articulates with femur. Faces laterally in os coxae
Acetabulum
Located within acetabulum of os coxae, crescent shaped smooth articular surface that articulates with femoral head
Lunate surface
Superior border of ilium, attachment area for many abdominal muscles in the os coxae. Hips
Iliac crest
Wide notch just inferior to the iliac spine. Lateral angle in os coxae
Greater sciatic notch
Blunt, massive posteroinferior corner of the os coxae, attachment point for extensor muscles. Hamstrings attach. Os coxae
Ischial tuberosity
Roughened surface posterosuperior to auricular surface of os coxae, attachment point for sacroiliac ligaments. Articulates with sacrum
Iliac tuberosity
Ear shaped sacral articulation, right above the greater sciatic notch of os coxae. Articulates with sacrum
Auricular surface
Variable groove along the inferior edge of auricular surface of os coxae
Preauricular surfface
Anterior and inferior, two os coxae articulate anteriorly, midline surface of the pubis where they most closely approach
pubic symphysis
Large foramen covered by membrane in life, anterior inferior. Holes in os coxae
Obturator foramen
