The leg Flashcards
Largest bone of the body, similar to the humerus, helps determine height estimation
Femur
Rounded proximal part of femur, articulates with the acetabulum. Faces medially and is the most superior part
Head
Connects head with shaft, angled narrowing of the bone that connects with the femur’s shaft
Neck
Blunt lateral and proximal projection of femur, insertion site for gluteal muscles
Greater trochanter
Blunt media-posterior tubercle; attachment point for the psoas muscle. Inferior to femur’s neck
Lesser trochanter
Notched articular surface of the femur for the patella, inferior
Patellar surface
Small depression in center of head. Ligament connecting femur to acetabulum attaches here
Fovea capitis
In between the greater trochanter and lesser. Elevated ridge on posterior femur connecting the greater and lesser trochanters
Interochanteric crest
Thick elevated ridge that runs down the distal surface of the femur, posterior end of femur, major insertion site for muscles of the hip and knee
Linea aspera
Inferior medial extension of linear aspera as it moves distally down the femur
Medial supracondylar ridge
Inferior lateral extension of linea aspera as it moves distally down the femur, more pronounced than medial
Lateral supracondylar ridge
Attachment point on femur for medial collateral ligament, sits on top of medial condyle
Medial epicondyle
Large articular knob, extends more distally than lateral condyle. Inferior to medial epicondyle
Medial condyle
Attachment point for lateral collateral ligament on femur, sits on condyle
Lateral epicondyle
Large protruding articular knob, inferior to lateral epicondyle
Lateral condyle
