The pelvic girdle Flashcards
what is the pelvic girdle? location?
a ring-like structure, located in the lower part of the trunk
what does the pelvic girdle connect?
connects the axial skeleton to the lower limbs
what does the pelvis consist of?
2 hip bones: sacrum and coccyx
what are the articulations within the pelvis?
Sacroiliac Joints (x2)
Sacrococcygeal symphysis
Pubic symphysis
what do the 2 sacroiliac joints connect?
Between the ilium of the hip bones, and the sacrum
what does the sacrococcygeal symphysis connect?
Between the sacrum and the coccyx
where is the pubic symphysis?
Between the pubis bodies of the two hip bones
where do ligaments attach in the pelvis?
Ligaments attach the lateral border of the sacrum to various bony landmarks on the bony pelvis
function of ligaments within the pelvis?
aid stability
main functions of the pelvis?
Transfer of weight
Provides attachment
Contains and protects
what does the pelvis transfer weight from and to?
from the upper axial skeleton to the lower appendicular components of the skeleton, especially during movement
what does the pelvis provide attachment for?
for a number of muscles and ligaments used in locomotion
what does the pelvis contain and protect?
the abdominopelvic and pelvic visera
how can the osteology of the pelvic girdle be divided?
into 2:
superior portion = greater pelvis (false pelvis)
inferior portion = lesser pelvis (true pelvis)
function of greater (false) pelvis?
It provides support for the lower abdominal viscera (ileum and sigmoid colon), and has no obstetric relevance
what is contained within the lesser (true) pelvis?
Within this reside the pelvic cavity and pelvic viscera
what is the pelvic inlet?
The junction between the greater and lesser pelvis
what is the pelvic brim?
The outer bony edges of the pelvic inlet
what determines the size of the pelvic inlet?
the pelvic brim (edges)
posterior border of pelvic inlet?
The sacral promontory (the superior portion of the sacrum)
lateral border of pelvic inlet?
The arcuate line on the inner surface of the ilium, and the pectineal line on the superior ramus
anterior border of pelvic inlet?
The pubic symphysis
what does the pelvic inlet determine?
determines the size and shape of the birth canal
function of prominent ridges of pelvic inlet?
key areas of muscle and ligament attachment
what is the Linea Terminalis?
Refers to the combined pectineal line, arcuate line and sacral promontory
what is the Iliopectineal line?
Refers to the combined arcuate and pectineal lines
where is the pelvic outlet located?
located at the end of the lesser pelvis, and the beginning of the pelvic wall
posterior border of pelvic outlet?
The tip of the coccyx
lateral border of pelvic outlet?
The ischial tuberosities and the inferior margin of the sacrotuberous ligament
anterior border of pelvic outlet?
The pubic arch (the inferior border of the ischiopubic rami)
what is the sub-pubic angle?
The angle beneath the pubic arch
which gender has a larger sub-pubic angle?
greater size in women
