The pelvic girdle Flashcards
what is the pelvic girdle? location?
a ring-like structure, located in the lower part of the trunk
what does the pelvic girdle connect?
connects the axial skeleton to the lower limbs
what does the pelvis consist of?
2 hip bones: sacrum and coccyx
what are the articulations within the pelvis?
Sacroiliac Joints (x2)
Sacrococcygeal symphysis
Pubic symphysis
what do the 2 sacroiliac joints connect?
Between the ilium of the hip bones, and the sacrum
what does the sacrococcygeal symphysis connect?
Between the sacrum and the coccyx
where is the pubic symphysis?
Between the pubis bodies of the two hip bones
where do ligaments attach in the pelvis?
Ligaments attach the lateral border of the sacrum to various bony landmarks on the bony pelvis
function of ligaments within the pelvis?
aid stability
main functions of the pelvis?
Transfer of weight
Provides attachment
Contains and protects
what does the pelvis transfer weight from and to?
from the upper axial skeleton to the lower appendicular components of the skeleton, especially during movement
what does the pelvis provide attachment for?
for a number of muscles and ligaments used in locomotion
what does the pelvis contain and protect?
the abdominopelvic and pelvic visera
how can the osteology of the pelvic girdle be divided?
into 2:
superior portion = greater pelvis (false pelvis)
inferior portion = lesser pelvis (true pelvis)
function of greater (false) pelvis?
It provides support for the lower abdominal viscera (ileum and sigmoid colon), and has no obstetric relevance
