The Path Of Food Flashcards
Ingestion
Taking in food
Digestion
breaking down food
Absorption
taking digested food from our intestines into our blood
Assimilation
using the food in the cells of the body
Egestion
discharge of undigested waste
Why do we need food?
To give us energy, provide raw material for growth, allow us to repair the body
What are the two types of digestion
Physical digestion and chemical digestion
What’s chemical digestion?
breakdown of food using enzymes (or hydrochloric acid in the stomach).
What are enzymes?
An enzyme is a chemical (made of protein) produced by the body that speeds up chemical reactions in the body without the enzyme being used up.
What does a catalyst do?
Speed up chemical reactions
What enzyme does saliva contain?
Amylase, which breaks starch down into maltose
What is physical digestion?
Physical digestion is the breakdown of food using mechanical or physical methods.
What is physical digestion?
Physical digestion is the breakdown of food using mechanical or physical methods.
Incisers
Sharp edges, like a chisel
Used to cut, slice and nibble food
Canine
Long and pointed
Used to grip and tear food
Premolers
Large with flat surfaces
Used for chewing, crushing and grinding food
Molars
Larger than premolars
Used for chewing, crushing and grinding food
Oesophagus
The oesophagus, or food pipe, is a muscular tube. It forces food down from the mouth to the stomach using a wave of muscular action (called peristalsis). Peristalsis also pushes food through the rest of our intestines.
Small intestine
The small intestine is a long tube (about 6 metres) but it has a narrow diameter. It has two functions:
• Digestion, Absorption.
Liver
The liver is a complex organ that carries out a range of functions: produces bile
Pancreas
The pancreas produces many digestive enzymes.
Large intestine
Takes water back into blood stream (reabsorbs water) and the semi solid material left is faeces.
Stomach
Hydrochloric acid in the stomach kills bacteria and softens food.
The stomach produces enzymes that chemically digest food. The stomach also churns and physically digests and mixes the food.
