Ch 10 Respiration & Photosynthesis Flashcards
What are biochemical process + examples
A biochemical process is a chemical reaction (or a series of chemical reactions) that takes place in a living thing.
Eg photosynthesis and respiration
What is respiration
Release of energy from food
What is anaerobic and aerobic respiration
Aerobic: needs oxygen
Anaerobic: doesn’t use oxygen
Anaerobic respiration word equation
glucose + oxygen —————> carbon dioxide + water + energy
What is needed for anaerobic respiration to take place
cells need a supply of glucose and oxygen. In humans:
• Glucose is carried by blood plasma from the small intestine to all the cells of the body
• Oxygen is carried by haemoglobin in red blood cells from the lungs to all the cells of the body.
Factors of respiration
Temperature, oxygen, water
What are the products of respiration
Energy, CO2, water(vapour)
What is photosynthesis
Plants use solar energy to make food in a process called photosynthesis.
What is photosynthesis
Plants use solar energy to make food in a process called photosynthesis.
What is the word equation for photosynthesis
Light
carbon dioxide + water→ → → → →glucose + oxygen
Chlorophyll
Factors of photosynthesis
Light, carbon dioxide, water, chlorophyll, temperature
Other factors of photosynthesis
The surface area of the leaves
The number of leaves
The distribution of leaves (i.e. whether they are blocking light from each other)
The number of tiny openings (called stomata) on the leaves.
