The paranasal sinuses Flashcards
Function
Reservoir of humidified air Decrease the weight of the skull Vocal resonance Covered in Mucosa with immune properties Crumple zones
What are they
Air spaces in the respiratory part of the nasal cavity
Innervation of the frontal sinus
CN V1
Innervation of the sphenoid?
CN V1 and CN V2
Innervation of the ethmoidal air cells?
CN V1
Innervation of the maxillary
CN V2
Which sinus has most complications with drainage?
Maxillary.
The opening is not in the most inferior space.
Which sinus is indented with teeth sockets?
The maxillary
Pathology of sinusitis
-Usually self-limiting
-At times can be chronic:
Inflammation causes the sinus ducts to become blocked
Mucous builds up
Mucous can become infected
Can lead to further inflammation- damage
Damage can lead to chronic damage e.g. the formation of polyps
Further blockage
Treatment for sinusitis?
- Anti-allergy treatment : remove triggers and anti-histamines
- Treat infection
- Reduce inflammation
- Surgery to remove polyps, clear up blockage
Consequences of sinusitis?
Consequences:
- Can damage lamina papyracea- damage to orbital
- Damage to skull- CSF damage
What is the lamina papyracea?
Thin sheet between the Ethmoid sinuses and the orbit
