Soft palate: separates the oral cavity from the nasopharynx

What are the muscles of the soft palate responsible for?
Responsible for elevating the palate: to seal off oral passage from the nasopharynx (when breathing or swallowing)
Responsible for depressing the palate: to seal off the oral passage from the nasal cavity (when breathing through the nose)
