What does the palate do?
Palate divides the nasal and oral cavities.
What is the uvula
Posterior end of palate
What is the anterior part of the palate?
The hard palate consisting of bones
What is the posterior part of the palate?
Soft palate consisting of muscles
From the soft palate the two arches come down and what is located between them?
Tonsils
What happens in the 1st trimester at 4 weeks
Primary (anterior) palate (partial separation of nasal and oral cavities)
What happens during the 1st trimester at 6 weeks?
Lateral palatine processes arise from maxillary process
What happens during the 1st trimester at 8 weeks?
Lateral palatine processes move horizontally-meet at the midline
What’s happens in the 1st trimester between weeks 8-9
Palatial fusion begins
What happens between birth and 2 weeks old
Rapid growth of hard and soft palate- between 0-1 weeks velum begins to close during oral sound protection
Three weeks after birth
Velum closed during oral speech
Between 2 and 10 weeks old
Nasopharyngeal tonsils (adenoids) grow
Weeks 13 onwards from birth
Nasopharyngeal tonsils (adenoids) shrink
Week 20
Nasopharyngeal tonsils (adenoids) atrophied
