The Ottawa Charter Flashcards
Ottawa Charter for health Promotion
And approach to health developed by the world health organisation that aims to reduce inequalities in health. It reflects the social model of health and provides five action areas that can be used as a basis for improving health status, all of which are centred around three strategies for health promotion Which are enabling, mediating and advocacy
health promotion
The process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. Health promotion therefore focuses on prevention rather than cure and uses the causes of diseases as the starting point rather than the disease itself

Strategies for health promotion
- Advocate
- Enable
- Mediate

Advocacy for health and wellbeing refers to actions that aim to gain support from governments and societies in general to make the changes necessary to improve the factors that influence health and wellbeing for everyone
Enable

This includes education, employment, adequate housing, nutritious food and healthcare by empowering people, not merely providing handouts
Mediate
Different groups have different wants and needs. Mediating relates to helping different groups resolve conflict and produce outcomes that promote health and well-being. For example reducing speed limits on roads may cause conflict between groups, however, such changes insure lives are saved on the roads and promote health and wellbeing
