Mortality Patterns Over Timr Flashcards
Describe the changes in mortality patterns from the early 1900s until today.
In the early 1900s the main causes of death were from infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, influenza and small pox, however, over the past 100 years these deaths have declined due to factors such as improved living conditions such as safe water and sanitation systems reducing rates of infectious diseases aswel as the development of widespread public vaccination programs preventing the onset of many diseases. Instead these diseases have been replaced by non-communicable diseases (associated with our lifestyle) such as cardiovascular disease, cancers, injuries and obesity due to many individuals having greater access to food security and over supply of food leading to conditions associated with excess body weight.
