What are Critical Periods
This is the time when certain environmental factors can influence the development of an infant (Embryonic Period)
What are Birth Defects
This comes from a malfunctioning gene or an environmental stimulus (not hereditary)
What is a Teratogen
This is any non genetic agent that produces birth defects. Eg: Drugs, diseases, and, environmental chemicals.
What are some Teratogen agents
- Stress
- Alcohol
- Smoking/Nicotine
- Marijuana
- Prescription/Illegal Drugs
Stress
When stressed you are likely to engage in bad behavior.
Stress will have negative effects on the baby.
Alcohol
Drinking alcohol during pregnancy could cause disabilities.
What is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)
This includes physical, cognitive, and psychological abnormalities resulted from drinking during pregnancy. Also intelligence, a small head, flat face, misshapen eyes, flat nose, and thin upper lips.
Smoking/Nicotine
When a mother smokes the baby experiences a reduction in blood oxygen level and nutrients. it increases the chances to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). it could also cause the baby to be premature and low weight.
Marijuana
Smoking this substance during pregnancy could cause low weight,
developmental problems, and difficulty with attention.
Prescription/Illegal Drugs
Taking these substances during pregnancy could lead to the baby being born addicted, born prematurely, have low birth weight, and experience other physical defects. Even attention and behavioral problems.
Who are Neonates
These are infants less than 4 weeks, they turn their heads towards human voices, babies preferer the breast pads of their mothers compared to others.
Reflexes in Babies
Babies preform certain innate reflexes that they are born with to help them survive, they are, grasping, rooting, sucking, Moro reflexes, stepping, Babinski reflex
What is Maturation
This is the biological growth process that enables orderly changes in behavior, relatively uninfluenced by experience. It is the process of maturing.
What are Developmental Norms
This is the normal timelines of mental and physical growth and changes that occurs as an entity ages.
What are the Six Motor Milestones
This is when the infant’s muscles and nervous system mature, skills emerge
- Sit without help
- Crawling on hands and knees
- Standing with assistance
- walking with assistance
- Standing alone
- Walking alone
