The Neuron Flashcards
What does the neuron do?
receives and transmits electrical impulses
What is the myelin sheath?
- Wrappings of membrane around the axon
- function: protect and insulate, increase speed of nerve transmission
what does the astrocyte do (CNS)?
provides 3D framework and controls environment
What is the oligodendrocyte (CNS)?
myelin sheath
What is the microglia responsible for (CNS)?
immune function
What is the ependymal (CNS)?
epithelial-like cell that lines fluid-filled canals and cavities and produces cerebrospinal fluid
In the PNS, the satellite cell has the same function as…
the astrocyte
The schwann cell is considered as…
the myelin sheath of the PNS
What is a nerve impulse/ transmission?
- the result of changes in membrane potential or ion movement across the membrane of the neuron
- it is a property of neurons and muscle cells
Define membrane potential
It is the unequal charge distribution across a membrane
Define polarized
is the resting membrane potential (-70mV)
Define depolarization
potential becomes more positive (less polar)
Define hyperpolarization
potential becomes more negative (more polar)
Define repolarization
becomes more negative returning to rest
Define hyper-repolarization
becomes more negative than -70mV
