The Neuron Flashcards
1
Q
Neuron
A
Individual Nerve cell
receive, integrate, and transmit information
networks
2
Q
Glial Cell (Glia)
A
support, nourish, and protect neurons
deliver nutrients, produce myelin, flush waste influencing information processing
outnumber neurons 10:1 50% of brains volume
3
Q
Dendrites
A
receive information
conduct impulses toward cell body
4
Q
Soma
A
- cell body; contains nucleus
- life support center
- determines if neuron will fire
5
Q
Axon
A
- tube like fiber that carries nerve impulses away from Soma
- passes messages through its branches to other neurons/muscles/glands
6
Q
myelin sheath
A
- fatty substance produced by certain glial cells
- encases axon and helps insulate, protect, and spread the neural impulse
7
Q
Terminal Branches (knobs)
A
contains buttons that secrete neurotransmitters
8
Q
Synapse
A
-space between two neurons (neurons never touch)
-information is transmitted (released from terminal branches detected by dendrites)
