Sleep Flashcards
Conciousness
awareness of ourselves and environment measured by an EEG
Circadian Rhythm
sleep/wake cycle, biological clock
Sleep Cycle Stages
every 90 minutes, 4 cycles measured by brain waves on an EEG
Beta and Alpha waves
Beta- awake and active waves
Alpha - relaxed and ready to sleep
NREM 1
Alpha decreases and theta increases
breathing slows, temp lowers, hallucinations called hypnagogic sensations and hypnic jerks
Nrem 2
theta slow, sleep spindles, bursts of brain activity, transition stage
Nrem 3
slow delta waves, restorative, growth, sleepwalking and talking occur
rem
waves are rapid and jagged, rise in body temp, eyes and heart rate as well as breathing increases, internally aroused, paralyzed, vivid dreaming
Rem rebound
rem sleep increases after being interuppted showing its causes are deeply biological
Sleep Needed
Adults: 7-9hrs
Teen: 8-10hrs
Restoration theory
bodies wear out. and need sleep to restore and reenergize helping repair muscles and supprt growth
consolidation theory
sleep helps us sort strengthen snd rebuild memories of the days experiences
Activation Synthesis Theory
Rem helps preserve and develop neural connections, dreams are the side effects of neural activation that produces beta waves
- random signals sent into the cortex creat a dream storyline to make sense of the signals
Somnambulism
sleepwalking, occurs in nrem3
Night terrors
nrem 3, abrupt arousal and feeling of panic
