Nervous System Flashcards
The nervous system
The body’s speedy electrical communication network consisting of the nerve cells of the peripheral and central nervous system
Sensory Neurons
Carry messages from the body’s tissues and sensory receptors inward to the brain and spinal cord for processing
Motor Neuron
Carry instructions from the central nervous system out of the body’s muscles and glands
Inter Neurons
Neurons within the brain and the spinal cord that communicate internally and process information between the sensory inputs and motor outputs
Central Nervous System
Contains the brain and spinal cord
Brain
(Central NS)
BOSS of the nervous system, interprets info from senses making decisions and sending commands, the brains neurons cluster and form neural networks
Spine
(Central NS)
directs messages to and from the brain, responsible for fast lifesaving reflexes.
(Reflex arc here)
Reflex Arc
three types of neurons that work together in the spinal cord
(a sensory and motor neuron communicating through an interneuron)
Peripheral Nervous System
The sensory and motor neurons that are outside of the brain and spinal cord, the connect the nervous system to the rest of the body
(Divided into the somatic and autonomic nervous system)
Somatic Nervous System
Allows voluntary control of our skeletal muscles and for processing sensory input
Autonomic Nervous System
Controls glands and involuntary organs like the heart comprised of sympathetic and parasympathetic NS’s
Sympathetic NS
Located in middle of the spinal column reacts to stress and arouses fight or flight system
Parasympathetic NS
Located on either side of sympathetic division, restores body to normal functioning after arousal, rest and digest system
