The Neuromuscular System Flashcards
state the two functions of the nervous system
- a communication system (via electrical impulses)
2. assists the body to maintain homeostasis (along with the endocrine system)
the nervous system is split into:
- CNS
2. PNS - somatic + autonomic
state what it is meant by the key term - sensation
carried out by the sensory nerves which carry the information to the CNS
state what it is meant by the key term - integration/analysis
the CNS integrates and analyses the information it’s received from the sensory neurones to decide upon a response
state what it is meant by the key term - response
messengers sent from the CNS along motor neurones to effector cells
nervous system - state the 5 sequences of events
- sensory receptors detect stimuli
- send into to CNS along sensory neurones
- CNS integrates and analyses the information
- electrical impulse sent down the motor neurone
- effector cell is stimulated and makes a response
state, and explain, the three types of muscle
- smooth - associated with hollow tubular structures (involuntary)
- cardiac - located in the heart (involuntary)
- skeletal - produce movement, stabilise joints, assist in posture maintenance + generate heat (voluntary and involuntary)
state the 4 characteristics of muscle tissue
- extensibility
- excitability
- electrical excitability
- contractility
state what it is meant by the key term - motor unit
the motor neurone plus all the motor fibres it innervates
effects of exercise on the neuromuscular system:
the majority of fitness improvements in the early stages of training result from changes in the way the CNS controls and co-ordinates movements
increased proprioception leads to:
- enhanced balance
- enhanced relative abilities
- enhanced MU recruitment efficiency
enhanced MU recruitment efficiency leads to:
speed, acceleration, co-ordination, endurance, strength, power
cardiovascular training can lead to:
- capillerisation
- increased size and number of mitochondria
- increase in aerobic enzyme activity
- increased aerobic fuel stores
- increased myoglobin content within muscles
