when dealing with customer complaints, as the gym instructor, you should do the following:
- listen without interrupting
- take ownership of the complaint
- remain calm and never enter into an argument
- follow normal operating procedure (NOP) or dealing with complaints
- ensure customer is appeased before they leave
- inform relevant staff about problem
- follow-up with the client with a progress update
health and safety at work act 1974:
employers must ensure that the health, safety and welfare of employees are protected as far as reasonably practicable
the general requirements of the health and safety at work act 1974 are:
- the workspace is safe
- there are safe systems of work
- there is a provision of information, instruction, training and supervision needed to ensure safety
management of health and safety at work act 1999:
- reinforces H+S at work act 1974
- identification of risks and hazards
- ways to minimise risks and hazards (NOP’s and EAP’s)

- identify hazards
- decide who may be harmed, and how
- evaluate the risks and decide on the precautions
- record your findings and implement them
- review your assessment and update if necessary
maintaining the safety of gym equipment can be attained by:
- observing members exercise technique
- checking tidiness of the gym floor (especially in the free weights areas)
- equipment checks
- cleaning (NOP for each area)
- handover at the end of shifts
