The Neural Tube Flashcards
The hollow cylinder that is the beginning of the central nervous system.
Neural Tube
The central cavity of the neural tube
Neurocoel
The cephalic portion of the neural tube that enlarges into three divisions.
Primary Brain Vesicles
The anterior tip of the neural tube.
Prosencephalon
An expansional caudal to the prosencephalon.
Mesencephalon
The most caudal of the primary brain vesicles. Continuous with the spinal cord.
Rhombencephalon
Develop from the prosencephalon and the rhombencephalon.
Secondary Brain Vesicles
Derivative of the prosencephalon. Expands rapidly during development, eventually becoming the cerebrum.
Telencephalon
Derivative of the prosencephalon. Becomes the major relay and processing center for information headed to and from the cerebrum
Diencephalon
Derivative of the rhombencephalon. Caudal to the midbrain. Forms the cerebellum and the pons.
Metencephalon
Derivative of the rhombencephalon. Becomes the medulla oblongata.
Myelencephalon
Name the three primary vesicles.
The three primary brain vesicles are the prosencephalon, the mesencephalon, and the rhombencephalon.
Which structures give rise to the secondary brain vesicles?
The diencephalon and telencephalon are the secondary brain vesicles forming from the prosencephalon. The metencephalon and myelencephalon are secondary brain vesicles forming from the rhombencephalon.
Which region of the adult brain is the largest?
The cerebrum
