Cellular Organization of the Nervous System Flashcards
Consists of the brain and spinal cord. Responsible for integrating, processing, and coordinating sensory data and motor commands.
Central Nervous System
Includes all the neural tissue outside the CNS.
Peripheral Nervous System
Includes the integration and distribution of information in the CNS.
Information Processing
Part of the PNS that brings information to the CNS from receptors in peripheral tissues and organs.
Sensory Division
Provide position, tough, pressure, pain, and temperature information sensations.
Somatic Sensory Receptors
Provide sensations of smell, taste, vision, balance, and hearing.
Special Sensory Receptors
Monitor internal organs.
Visceral Sensory Receptors
Sensory structures that detect changes in the internal or external environment.
Receptors
Part of the PNS that caries motor commands from the CNS to peripheral tissues and systems.
Motor Division
Controls skeletal muscle contractions.
Somatic Nervous System
Automatically regulates smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, glands, and adipose tissue.
Autonomic Nervous System
Target organs whose activities change in response to neural commands.
Effectors
Regions of the CNS dominated by myelinated axons.
White Matter
Areas of the CNS containing neuron cell bodies, dendrites, and unmyelinated axons.
Gray Matter
Cluster of nerve cell bodies in the CNS.
