The Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Innervates the olfactory epithelium
Olfactory Tract
Innervates the retina of the eye
Optic Nerve (II)
Innervates most muscles involved in eye movement
Oculomotor Nerve (III)
Innervates the superior oblique muscle in the eye
Trochlear Nerve (IV)
Innervates the areas associated with the jaw
Trigeminal Nerve (V)
Sensory ganglion of the trigeminal nerve
Semilunar Ganglion
Innervates orbital structures, nasal cavity, skin of the forehead, the upper eyelid, eyebrows, and part of the nose.
Ophthalmic Nerve (V1)
Innervates the Lower eyelid; superior lip, gums, and teeth; cheek, part of nose, palate, and part of the pharynx
Maxillary Nerve (V2)
Innervates inferior gums, teeth, lips, part of the palate, and part of the tongue.
Mandibular Nerve (V3)
Branch of the mandibular nerve.
Lingual Nerve
Branch of the mandibular nerve that passes through the mandibular foramen.
Alveolar Nerve
Innervates the lateral rectus muscle of the eye.
Abducens Nerve (VI)
Innervates the tastes receptors on anterior two-thirds of tongue, muscles of facial expression, lacrimal gland, submandibular gland, and sublingual salivary glands,
Facial Nerve (VII)
Branch of the facial nerve. (T)
Temporal Nerve
Branch of the facial nerve. (Z)
Zygomatic Nerve
Branch of the facial nerve. (B)
Buccal Nerve
Branch of the facial nerve. (M)
Mandibular Branch of the Facial Nerve
Innervates the cochlea, and vestibule
Vestibulocochlear Nerve (VIII)
Innervates the posterior third of tongue, pharynx and part of palate, pharyngeal muscles, and parotid salivary gland.
Glossopharyngeal Nerve (IX)
Innervates the pharynx, auricle and external acoustic canal, diaphragm, visceral organs, palatal and pharyngeal muscles.
Vagus Nerve (X)
Innervates Skeletal muscles of the palate, pharynx, and larynx, sternocleidomastoid, and trapezius muscles.
Accessory Nerve (XI)
Innervates tongue musculature.
Hypoglossal Nerve (XII)
Identify the cranial nerves by name and number.
Olfactory (I), Optic (II), Oculomotor (III), Trochlear (IV), Trigeminal (V), Abducens (VI), Facial (VII), Vestibulocochlear (VIII), Glossopharyngeal (IX), Vagus (X), Accessory (XI), Hypoglossal (XII).
Which cranial nerves have motor function only?
Oculomotor (III), Trochlear (IV), Abducens (VI), Accessory (XI), and Hypoglossal (XII)
