the nervous system Flashcards
nervous system
consists of the brain, the spinal cord, and neurons. it controls the functions of the body, and receives and processes stimuli.
neurons
a network of billions of nerve cells
central nervous system
made up of the brain and the spinal cord
peripheral nervous system
contains all the other neurons found throughout the body
cerebrum
major part of the brain. responsible for hearing, seeing, thinking
cerebellum
big cluster of nerve tissue that form the basis of the brain. associated with balance, movement, and muscle coordination
medulla
part of the brain stem, connecting between the brain and spinal cord. controls breathing swallowing, and the beating of a heart.
spinal cord
major connecting center between the brain and the network of nerves. it carries impulses between all organs and the brain. control center for reflexes
somatic nervous system
consists of nerve fibers that send sensory information to the central nervous system and control voluntary actions.
autonomic nervous system
regulates involuntary activity in the heart, stomach, and intestines
