blood & circulatory system Flashcards
circulatory system
functions to transport oxygen throughout the body while removing carbon dioxide. It also transports nutrients and clears away waste by taking it to the excretory system.
heart
the organ that drives the circulatory. 4 chambered pump with 2 collecting chambers
atria (atrium)
the 2 collecting chambers of the heart
ventricles
the 2 pumping chambers of the heart
right atrium
receives de-oxygenated blood from the venae cavae
venae cavae
2 largest veins in the body : pass to the right ventricle
right ventricle
pumps blood through the pulmonary artery
pulmonary artery
pumps blood to the lungs
left atrium
blood picks up oxygen and is pumped to the aorta
aorta
the body’s largest artery which branches into smaller arteries that takes pumps blood throughout the body
heart valves
needed for efficient pumping of the heart
heart disease
also known as cardiovascular disease. is the most common death in the U.S. , high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, and lack of exercise contributes to this which can lead to a heart attack or heart failure.
arteries
carry blood from the heart to the tissues via the capillaries
capillaries
thin walled vessels that are very small and permit exchange of materials like oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, and waste between the blood and the body’s cells through diffusion.
hypertension
Also known as high blood pressure, it can cause damage to the blood vessels and kidneys.
