earth & space science Flashcards
crust
the outermost layer- it comprises of roughly 1% of the total volume of earth. it’s 10-100 kilometers thick
mantle
comprises more than 75% of earths volume, it’s roughly 3000 kilometers thick. contains mostly iron, magnesium, and calcium
core
nearly twice as dense as the mantle. has two distinct parts- a 2200 kilo thick liquid outer core and a 1300 kilo solid inner core
lithophere
crust and rigid upper part of the mantle- it consists of 30 separate pieces called plates
asthenosphere
the more movable mantle below the lithosphere
fault lines
places where the plates slide along each other `
richter scale
aka moment magnitude scale. scientist use this scale to measure the intensity of an earthquake
what are the 3 types of rocks?
igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic
precambrian eon
the period of time before the fossil record began
water cycle
aka hydrologic cycle. it involves the movement of water in all surface of matter through the atmosphere and back to the Earth
evaporation
when water becomes gas
transpiration
when water evaporates into the atmosphere from the leaves of plants
precipitation
when the clouds become too heavy, they release snow and ice
the carbon cycle
helps maintain Earths ecosystem
