The Nervous System Flashcards
Neuroglia
the cells that support and maintain cells of the nervous system. Can be subdivided into macroglia and microglia.
Types of junctions occurring between neurones and other excitable tissues
• Synaptic • Neuromuscular • Neuroglandular
Afferent neurone
Sensory neurone - conveys info to the CNS
Efferent neurone
Motor neurone - conveys info from the CNS
Synaptic junction
• Neurone to neurone • Can be excitatory or inhibitory • Only in grey matter
Neuromuscular junction
• Neurone to muscle cell • Always excitatory in skeletal muscle
Neuroglandular junction
• Neurone to glandular cells • Most secretory glands • Can be excitatory or inhibitory???
3 main types of neurones
• Multipolar • Bipolar • Unipolar
Multipolar
• One single axon with multiple dendrites • Most common neurone type • Typical for motor neurones and interneurones
Bipolar
• Special senses • One single axon and one dendrite • Relatively uncommon • Restricted mainly to sensory pathways (vision, taste, hearing, balance)
Unipolar
- Single process leaves cell body and divides in two
- Both structures resemble axons structurally but functionally one acts like a dendrite and the other like an axon
- Characteristic of general sensory neurones
