Forelimb Flashcards
What is the brachial plexus and where is it found?
- Found in the axilla (medial to shoulder joint)
- Formed by ventral rami of spinal nerves
- Supplies majority of muscles, skin ad other sensitive structures of the forelimb
What is the rule about cutaneous innervation for a nerve?
The cutaneous innervation for a nerve is distal to the muscles supplied by the same nerve.
What is the axillary nerve’s motor and sensory function?
Motor: to shoulder flexors (teres major, deltoideus) and to teres minor
Sensory: to the skin of the lateral distal brachium
What is the radial nerve’s motor and sensory function?
Motor: to all extensors of the elbow, carpus and digits
Sensory: to the dorsolateral aspect of the antebrachium, and dorsal carpus and digits *not in horses though*
What is the muculocutaneous nerve’s motor and sensory function?
Motor: to elbows flexors: biceps brachii, brachialis and corobrachialis
Sensory: to the antebrachial skin
Which two nerves in the forelimb can be considered a functional unit?
Median and ulnar nerves
What are the median and ulnar nerves’ sensory and motor functions?
Motor: to all flexors of the carpus and digits
Sensory - ulnar: caudal aspect of the antebrachium
Sensory - median and ulnar: sensation to skin of lateral, palmar digits.
