The Nervous System Flashcards
What is a genotype
Complete heritable genetic identity. Unique genome that can only be revealed by personal genome sequencing
What is a phenotype
A description of your actual physical characteristics. Straight forward visible characteristics *eye and hair colour
Susceptible to environmental influence
What does the brain provide
Conscious awareness
occipital lobe
Visual information
Temporal lobe
Auditory info
Parietal lobe
Spatial navigation
Frontal lobe
Higher order functions eg reasoning and logic
Role of peripheral nervous system
To relay nerve impulses (messages) from the CNS (brain and spinal cord) to the rest of the body
Role of somatic nervous system
Carry sensory info from the outside world to the brain and provide muscle response via the motor pathways
Role of the autonomic nervous system
Homeostasis
- temp
- heart rate
- blood pressure
Human nervous system
- peripheral
| autonomic and somatic
| parasympathetic and sympathetic
-central nervous system
|brain and spinal chord
Role of sympathetic nervous system
Prepares the body for fight or flight, helps organs in the body to prepare us for action when we are faced in dangerous situation.
- heart rate increase
- blood pressure increase
- repressed salvation
- repressed digestion
Role of the parasympathetic nervous system
Relax the body and return to normal resting state.
Slows down heart and breathing rate
Reduced blood pressure
Differences with the autonomic and somatic
Autonomic- controls internal organs and glands
Somatic- controls muscles and movements
Differences within CNS
Brain- responsible for loads of diff functions -higher order thinking
Spinal chord- only one main function - simple reflex’s
